What are dental implants?

Dental implants are a great option for replacing one or more teeth. A dental implant is a small titanium screw that acts as an artificial tooth root to hold a replacement tooth or bridge in place or to provide support for denture. Dental implants are permanent, durable, created to look and function just like natural teeth. There are many advantages to dental implants. Not only do implants enhance your smile they also help prevent bone loss that often accompanies dentures.

In most instances dental implants require 2 surgical procedures/phases.

Phase 1 – The dental implant, a small titanium screw, is surgically placed into the jawbone. At this time, in most cases, the gum tissue may be closed over the top of the implant. While a period of between one and half and 3 months is usually needed for proper healing of the implant, the exact time will be determined by Dr. Monica A. Flynn

Phase 2 – A metal post or abutment is inserted into the top of the implant. This post will extend up through the gum and into the mouth. Following the healing of the gum tissue around this metal post, a prosthetic phase will be started.

Brushing, flossing and regular professional dental care visits are very important to the success of the dental implant after treatment is complete.

Dr. Monica A. Flynn will work together with your general dentist prosthodontist to help utilize dental implants for your benefit.
