What is scaling and root planing?

Scaling and root planing is a deep cleaning of the root surfaces below the gum line to remove plaque and tartar from the root surfaces of the teeth. This procedure is more intensive than a routine general cleaning which traditionally occurs every six months. Scaling and root planing is a non-surgical approach to:
• Remove plaque and calculus (tartar) from teeth
• Smooth root surfaces
• Scaling and root planing maybe the only gum disease treatment needed, or it may be done to prepare for surgery.

Dr. Monica A. Flynn will numb the area prior to treatment to ensure your comfort. She usually uses a gel which is squirted between the teeth and gums to numb the area without using a needle.

Scaling and root planing is usually the first mode of treatment recommended for most periodontal patients. To learn more about scaling and root planing we invite you to contact us at Alamo Heights Periodontics today. We are always happy to answer any questions you may have!
